Americana was wholly inspired from a 1953 magazine called Woman’s World that I found at an estate sale. A classic mid-century publication for the aspiring and thoroughly modern-day homemaker.
As an admirer of kitsch, Americana, bygone eras, idealization, feminism, and irony I adored that magazine. I decided to pay a little tribute to it by creating a series of paintings called Americana. I wanted to accentuate the negative spaces between the layouts and typesets, to paint the charade of rapturous Americanism, and the dark joy of our perverse dreams of perfectionism.
